Canada Day 2017 - What's Closed and When
With Canada Day falling on a Saturday this year, many businesses will observe the statuatory holiday on Monday, July 3. Here's a quick run down of what's closed and when before we get into the good stuff about all the fun things to do this July long weekend!
Liquor, beer and shopping centres will be closed on Saturday July 1. Banks with weekend hours are observing different days depending on the branch. Check with your local branch for thier holidays schedule.
Government offices, libraries and recreation facilities will be closed on Monday July 3.
Canada Post will not be delivering mail on Monday either.
Garbage collection for Oshawa and Whitby shifts one day ahead from July 3-8. If your collection pick up is normally Monday, it will be pushed to Tuesday. Tuesday pickup moves to Wednesday, and so on.
Durham Region Transit will be operating on a Sunday schedule on Saturday and returns to regular service on Monday July 3.
Now on to the good stuff...
This July long weekend is the final opportunity to catch local artist Amy Shackleton's massive Canada art exhibit at the Visual Arts Centre (VAC) of Clarington. The Great Canadian LEED-scape depics all 13 of Canada's beautiful provinces and territories across multiple paintings spanning 50 feet. Amy is a native of Bowmanville and current resident of Oshawa. Where's the Party?
Canada Day festivities are planned for all across Durham Region and the GTA. Here's just a sampling of some of the events you and your family can take in this weekend...
Canada Day 2017 - OSHAWA
Lakeview Park on the shores of Lake Ontario will have bands, kids activities and displays from 2pm - 10pm. The fireworks display is Canada 150 themed and set to an all-Canadian music score.
Canada Day 2017 - WHITBY
Canada Day County Town Carnival takes place at Victoria Fields from 12pm - 10pm. If you're a music lover, this is the one for you. 2 stages over multiple bands with other events scattered throughout the day including jet-ski displays on the water and a citizenship ceremony. How cool would it be to say that you became and official Canadian on Canada's 150th birthday?
Canada Day 2017 - PICKERING
Pickering is hosting several Canada Day events. Daytime activities will take place on the Esplanade Park from 12pm - 5pm. In the evening, events move to Kinsmen Park from 5pm - 10:30pm.
Canada Day 2017 - AJAX
Ajax Rotary Park will host family celebrations with face painting, inflatable rides, buskers and more including live entertainment. The event takes place between 11am - 3pm.
Canada Day 2017 - CLARINTON
Clarington celebrates Canada 150 takes place at the Garnet B Rickard centre from 6pm - 10pm with live music, food vendors, jumping castles, family activities and an outstanding fireworks display at dusk.
Canada Day 2017 - SCUGOG
Scugog celebrates at Palmer Park with a TWO DAY event starting on Saturday July 1 at 10:30 am and wrapping up on Sunday July 2 at 4pm featuring a parade, antique cars, bands and more. Kids activitiers, food vendors, beer tents and fun events for the whole family. The night ends with the grandest fireworks display over Lake Scugog.
Canada Day 2017 - NEWCASTLE
Newcastle hosts their Canada Day event on the main street downtown from 9am - 5pm on July 1 with family fun events, food vendors and more!
